2025 5-star safety Trey McNutt has delayed his commitment announcement

This week, things got a lot more interesting surrounding one of Texas A&M’s top prospects. 2025 five-star safety Trey McNutt, who was originally scheduled to announce his commitment on Friday, has reportedly pushed back his announcement until early next month.

His reasoning behind the delay is currently unknown. Still, based on pure speculation, he could be weighing his options between Oregon and Texas A&M, who remain the favorites in his final five-program list.

On3’s Steve Wiltfong reported earlier this week that Mike Elko and his staff are continuing to push for McNutt despite Oregon’s slim lead. They’re basing their efforts on this summer’s recruiting momentum, as Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class currently sits at 19 commits with more on the way this fall.

Finally ready to make his final college decision, McNutt announced he would commit on Saturday, August 3, choosing between Florida, Ohio State, Oregon, USC and Texas A&M.

On the field, McNutt is one of the nation’s best defensive playmakers. He has 61 tackles, two for loss, 12 pass breakups and a forced fumble this year. He excelled as a wide receiver on offense during his junior season in 2023.

According to 247Sports, McNutt is currently ranked 23rd overall in the 2025 cycle, the No. 1 safety and the No. 2 prospect in Ohio.
