Child dies after being found in parked car in East Hanover – NBC New York

A baby girl has died after she was found in a parked car in New Jersey, police said during one of the hottest days of the summer.

East Hanover officers were called to a parking lot near South Ridgedale Avenue and Route 10 Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. after a child was found in a parked car, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office. Paramedics at the scene treated the 6-month-old girl found inside the car.

The girl was rushed to hospital, where she died. Her mother was also taken to hospital for treatment.

What led up to the baby being found in the car wasn’t immediately clear, but a preliminary investigation indicated the child had been left alone in the car before she died. It wasn’t clear how long she had been in the car, however.

The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined. The incident remains under investigation by the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, East Hanover Police Department and the county sheriff’s office.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office at 973-285-6200 or the East Hanover Police Department at 973-887-0432.

It follows a series of similar incidents in New York and New Jersey during the week, which began with four days of temperatures rising between 90 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the Monticello Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call of a child in cardiac arrest in a vehicle outside the Sleepy Hollow Apartment Complex around 6:45 p.m. Monday. Emergency responders were unable to revive the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sullivan County coroner.

It was not immediately clear how long the child had been in the vehicle. The New York State Police are leading the investigation. There was no word on a possible suspect or suspects, nor were there any additional details about the circumstances.

A car seat was seen next to the vehicle.

A similar tragedy unfolded earlier in the day in New Jersey, where an 8-week-old girl died. Her father was charged.

Another child in New York was locked in his family’s car on one of the hottest days of the year on Tuesday, police said. Clarkstown police received a call about a boy locked in a vehicle at the wholesale store on Overlook Boulevard in Nanuet after 2 p.m., police said. When officers arrived, they found the father, who said his son was locked inside.

One of the officers saw the child in the backseat and, without knowing how long the child had been trapped in the car, broke the window of the vehicle to remove him, police said. The boy was alert and conscious when he was removed from the vehicle and was taken to Montefiore Nyack Hospital for further evaluation. He was expected to recover.

Investigation revealed that the father had returned to his car to get his wallet and placed his child in the backseat while he searched the trunk. Clarkstown police said the father closed the trunk and quickly realized he had locked his son inside.

The father tried desperately to get into the car, but failed, so he ran to get help.

The child was in the vehicle for about 15 minutes before being rescued, police said. Temperatures reached 98 degrees on Tuesday afternoon, and the temperature inside a car can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, so getting the child out was crucial to saving his life.

According to the police, there is no criminal offense in connection with the incident.
