Nazi Honorary Marines Sentenced to Nearly 5 Years in US Capitol Attack

JAKARTA – A Marine who stormed the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, while giving a Nazi salute, has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison.

Tyler Bradley Dykes of South Carolina was an active duty Marine when he retrieved riot shields from two police officers.

He used it to break through police lines as a crowd of President Donald Trump’s supporters descended on him.

Dykes (26) pleaded guilty in April to sexual assault and was previously convicted of crimes stemming from a 2017 Unite the Right white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dykes was transferred to federal custody in 2023 after serving a six-month sentence in state prisons.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell sentenced Dykes to four years and nine months in prison, the Justice Department said.

Federal prosecutors had previously recommended a prison sentence of five years and three months for Dykes.

“He is directly contributing to the most extreme violence on the east side of the Capitol,” the prosecutor wrote.

Dykes’ attorney asked for a two-year prison sentence, saying Dykes knew his actions on Jan. 6 were “illegal, non-permanent and intolerable.”

“Tyler hates his involvement in the Capitol riots,” his attorney wrote.

“He is fully responsible for his actions. Tyler apologizes for the move,” he continued.

Dykes denied performing a Nazi-style tribute on January 6, but prosecutors said his open hand was seen on the video.

More than 1,400 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Capitol riots. More than 900 have been convicted, with about two-thirds receiving prison sentences ranging from a few days to 22 years.
