AG Raúl Torrez Announces Launch of Internet Safety Web Page – Los Alamos Reporter

PRESS RELEASE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE

New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez has announced the launch of the New Mexico Department of Justice’s Internet Safety Web page. The page includes a “experience form” where parents and teens can share their past or current struggles with social media platforms. These submitted experiences will help inform a broader campaign to be announced later this summer.

While the NMDOJ works tirelessly to hold social media companies accountable for failing to protect children on their platforms, the Internet Safety page serves as an additional resource for parents and teens. In particular, the page offers parents and teens extensive resources, including social media privacy guides and information about “Take It Down,” a free service to stop the sharing of explicit images or videos of minors online.

“As technology continues to advance and more of our daily lives are shared online, it is important that we take steps to protect our children, our families, and our communities,” said Attorney General Raul Torrez. “The Internet Safety Page was created to be a valuable resource for everyone, and the New Mexico Department of Justice is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the digital world.”

With a growing backlog of at least 2.5 million flagged underage user accounts on Meta Platforms alone, it is clear that parents and children need immediate protection while using certain social media applications. “The danger is very real, especially for our children. For example, every day on Meta, an estimated 100,000 children are victims of online sexual harassment,” added AG Torrez. (Case: D-101-CV-2023-02838; State of New Mexico v. Meta Platforms Inc, et.
