Sean Totsch headed in a goal in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time on Friday to lead Louisville City FC to a commanding 2-1 victory over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

It was LouCity’s second comeback win of the year and the boys in purple remained atop the USL Championship standings entering the second half of the season, going 13-4-2 with 41 points.

“We gave it everything we had on the field,” head coach Danny Cruz said. “Tonight, it’s pretty powerful for the group to keep creating chances – to limit chances in the second half. It’s definitely an achievement the guys can be proud of.”

LouCity won despite a less than ideal start, playing its first game in 13 days and having lost three of its last five games.

Right at halftime, the boys in purple increased their intensity. Colorado Springs didn’t take a shot until the 76th minute of the second half and LouCity converted a series of chances – there were 33 of them – into a late winner.

On the last of those balls, Totsch made the most of a razor-sharp serve from Taylor Davila, heading the ball home with a leap for his fourth goal of the year.

“At this club we’re going to fight until the end,” Totsch said. “With the guys we have, we’re going to do big things. To really have to get a result at the end, everyone did it, so that’s big for us.”

LouCity scored its 12th goal in the final quarter of the game this season, the most goals scored by any club in the USL Championship.

It came back from an early deficit after Colorado Springs took the early lead through Maalique Foster in the 16th minute. But the boys in purple responded quickly when Elijah Wynder equalized in the 28th minute, with a precise one-touch finish off the rebound.

Wynder also scored his fourth goal of the season, a new record for the LouCity Academy alumnus.

“We didn’t start the game the way we expected,” Cruz said, “especially here at home.”

A number of other moments could have changed the outcome, including the penalty Ronaldo Damus earned in the 36th minute, much to the consternation of the LouCity bench when Amadou Dia appeared to get the ball with his foot in a tackle in the penalty area. Damus then tipped the subsequent effort from the spot onto the post.

Colorado Springs hit the woodwork again in the second half and LouCity saw two goals disallowed on Friday.

“Three points instead of one point, that’s a huge difference,” said Wynder.

LouCity remains just ahead of the Charleston Battery with a game in hand against the Eastern Conference’s second-place club. The boys in purple then turn their attention to a home game on July 27 against Monterey Bay FC.
