The main reason why Liverpool goalkeepers wear sunglasses in training

  • Premier League giants Liverpool’s preparations for the 2024-25 Premier League season are in full swing under the leadership of Arne Slot
  • Manager Arne Slot introduces creative training techniques, with goalkeepers wearing glasses and noise-canceling headphones during training

Arne Slot’s reorganization at Liverpool is in full swing. During the pre-season we saw some unusual scenes, including goalkeepers wearing goggles.

The Dutch manager started preparing for the new season earlier than usual, at the beginning of the month, which gave him more time to integrate into the team.

Liverpool are preparing for a trip to the United States next week. On July 23, the club will head to Pittsburgh for their first American pre-season tour since 2019.

In previous years, the Reds toured Singapore and Thailand.

In the United States, Liverpool will play three matches, starting with a match against Real Betis at the Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Friday, July 26.

On July 31, they play Arsenal at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, followed by a match against Manchester United at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, on August 3.

The final’s first match at Anfield is scheduled for August 11, when Liverpool take on Sevilla.

Why do Liverpool’s goalkeepers wear glasses during training?

Last week, a video was posted to the club’s YouTube channel showing players returning to training in preparation for the 2024-25 Premier League season.

A striking moment in the video came when new goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte instructed 21-year-old Marcelo Pitaluga to use the American-designed Swivel Vision training goggles.

These glasses limit peripheral vision, forcing goalkeepers to improve their visual perception and rely more on auditory cues.

During passing drills, Otte encouraged players to “find angles” and “keep scanning,” and they used noise-cancelling headphones to further reduce sensory input and improve visual focus.
