Joe Biden faces an inglorious end

Pressure is mounting on President Joe Biden as speculation mounts that he is ready to accept that his 2024 campaign is over.

Biden has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he should not seek re-election after his weak and stumbling performance at the CNN debate, saying he is still the best Democratic candidate to beat Donald Trump in November.

In recent days, however, Biden has lost the support of more and more Democratic figures, with Montana Senator Jon Tester and California Representative Adam Schiff being the latest names to publicly call on the president to abandon his candidacy.

Biden’s campaign, which is essentially on hold as he is isolating in Delaware after contracting COVID-19, has also prompted several top Democrats to tell Axios that the president could end his campaign as early as this weekend. The Biden For President campaign called for an all-staff meeting on Friday, The Associated Press reported.

If the reports of an impending end to the campaign, which have not been confirmed by the authorities, NewsweekIf that were true, Biden would face the worrying prospect of a one-term presidency. He had originally sought re-election, but withdrew from the race before he was officially declared the party’s presidential nominee.

Only five sitting presidents in U.S. history have been denied their party’s nomination for a second term. The last was Chester A. Arthur, in 1884, when he failed to receive the Republican Party nomination

According to The Washington Post, Former President Barack Obama has told allies that Biden should consider resigning.

The mail also reported that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the most influential members of the Democratic House of Representatives despite no longer holding a leadership position, also believes Biden can be persuaded to withdraw from the race against Trump over fears he may not win in November.

Responding to the reports, a Pelosi spokesperson told Newsweek: “Speaker Pelosi respects the confidentiality of her meetings and conversations with the President of the United States.

“Unfortunately, the press frenzy, based on anonymous sources, is misrepresenting the conversations the Speaker of the House allegedly had with the President.”

There are also suggestions that Biden is beginning to acknowledge the calls to resign and reconsider his position.

Biden is said to have wondered whether Vice President Kamala Harris, who is considered the favorite to replace him if he were to withdraw, could beat Trump in November, sources said. The New York Times.

Biden’s team has been contacted via email for comment.

Even before Biden’s troubling performance at the June 27 debate, the 81-year-old president feared he was too old to run for another term.

Biden has also had record-low approval ratings at times since taking office in January 2021.

He has consistently said that the November election is critical to preventing an authoritarian Trump from returning to the White House. The launch of The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 initiative is also critical.

With voters still three and a half months away from heading to the polls, some Democrats are hoping the man who led them to a triumphant victory in 2020 can help them win again in a different way.

“While I appreciate his dedication to public service and our country, I believe President Biden should not seek re-election for another term,” Senator Tester said in a statement.
