On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion Celtics sharpshooter Ray Allen was born in Merced, California. Allen, a military kid, “grew up” in many places, but would finish high school in Dalzell, South Carolina. He attended the University of Connecticut for college, where he won the Big East and UPI Player of the Year awards in 1996 while with the Huskies.

He was ultimately selected fifth overall in the 1996 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but was quickly dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks on draft night. He would remain in Milwaukee for seven seasons.

He would also play five campaigns for the Seattle Supersonics before being traded to the Celtics in the summer of 2007.

There he would help convince big man Kevin Garnett to come to Boston to set the stage for a new ‘Big Three’: himself, KG and Paul Pierce.

But injuries and bad luck, combined with several attempts by management to negotiate Allen, undermined the spirit of “ubuntu” behind the team’s last title and would eventually lead to Allen leaving for the Miami Heat.

The move, for less money than the Celtics offered to a conference rival, created a rift in the Banner 17 title team that took nearly a decade to repair.

It also marks the date that German center Daniel Theis signed with the team in 2017 to a two-year, $2.19 million contract.

Theis, who had previously tried unsuccessfully to earn a spot on the NBA roster, joined the Celtics that fall and quickly became a regular member of the rotation.

The Salzgitter native spent parts of four seasons with the Celtics, working his way up to a starting role with the franchise before being traded to the Chicago Bulls at the 2021 trade deadline, only to return a year later in a deal with the Houston Rockets.

At the end of the 2022-23 season, the German would join Aaron Nesmith, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and Nik Stauskas at the Indiana Pacers.

Theis averaged 7.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game during his time with the team.

Former Boston favorite Guerschon Yabusele also signed on this date, also in 2017.

Yabu, as he was called, was selected 16th overall by the Celtics in the 2016 NBA Draft and spent a season overseas to develop.

Ultimately, it didn’t work out with the Dancing Bear (he had several nicknames), Yabusele, who was fired in the summer of 2019, but he has since built a successful overseas career in China and Europe.

Yabusele averaged 2.3 points and 1.4 rebounds per game during his time with the team.

Former Boston player David Wesley signed with the team as a free agent on this date in 1994 to a three-year, $900,000 contract.

At Celtic, he averaged 12.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. In the summer of 1997, he left the team to sign with the Charlotte Hornets.

It was on this date in 2012 that the Celtics signed E’Twaun Moore, JaJuan Johnson, Sasha Pavlović and Sean Williams to a three-team deal that brought back guard Courtney Lee.

Lee would play two seasons for Boston before landing another three-team deal of his own that brought in Jerryd Bayless from the Celtics. During his time with Boston, Lee averaged 7.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

Finally, it is also the date that former Celtics owner John Joseph “Jack” Waldron passed away in 1971.

The New Bedford, Massachusetts native worked his way up to president of the Rupert Knickerbocker Brewing Company. In that role, he negotiated the purchase of the Celtics from Louis Pieri and Marjorie Brown, the partners who owned the team after the death of Brown’s husband, Walter.

The parent company later sold the franchise and Waldron left the company to remain president of the Celtics until 1970. Rest in peace.
