LAKEPORT, Calif. — Marshalls said Friday it is preparing to open its new store in Lakeport next month, while CareerPoint Lake plans to host a hiring event next week.

The new store, which will be located at 2017 South Main St. in part of the former Kmart store, will have its grand opening on Thursday, August 22 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

This week, CareerPoint Lake also announced that it has partnered with Marshalls to host a hiring event for 60 open positions.

Available positions include janitorial, merchandising, warehouse and customer service associates. The hourly rate is $16 with a part-time schedule. The company said there are growth opportunities available.

In-person interviews will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 22 through Thursday, July 25 at CareerPoint Lake, 55 First St., Lakeport. Walk-in is permitted. Marshalls is owned by TJX Companies Inc., reportedly the largest off-price retailer of apparel and home furnishings in the U.S. and worldwide.

TJX reported it has more than 4,900 stores in nine countries. Of those, based on openings since early 2024, that number includes more than 1,200 Marshalls stores in the United States.

In addition to the Lakeport store, Marshalls will open new stores in Florida, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas in August.

Marshalls is the second retailer to open a new store on the former Kmart site.

Tractor Supply Co. opened its new store on the other side of the building on May 19. It’s the second Tractor Supply store in Lake County; the other is in Clearlake.

There has been no confirmation yet from the city of Lakeport about a company that will take the third spot between Tractor Supply and Marshalls.

The addition of another retailer is promising news for the city of Lakeport, which lost a key source of sales tax revenue when Kmart closed the store — which was reportedly one of the top 25 best-performing stores in the United States — in late 2019 after about 30 years in business.

Before Kmart closed, the city hired The Retail Coach to help attract new businesses to the city.

The company has been instrumental in the work to add Tractor Supply and Marshalls to the city’s retail offering.
