Utah State football coach Blake Anderson fired for breach of contract

news-20072024-032840

Utah State University has decided to fire football coach Blake Anderson for what it described as serious violations of his contract. The university cited actions by Anderson in the spring 2023 semester that violated his employment agreement and university policy. An external investigation found that he failed to adhere to Title IX policies regarding reporting incidents of sexual misconduct.

In addition to Anderson, the university also fired Jerry Bovee, associate vice president and deputy athletic director of external affairs, and Austin Albrecht, director of player development and community, for alleged violations related to reporting incidents of sexual and domestic violence and failing to meet professional responsibilities.

After Anderson was informed of their plans to terminate his contract, the university waited for his response, as required by Utah law. Anderson’s response failed to acknowledge his responsibilities as a USU employee and head coach, the university said. Instead, Anderson attempted to make excuses and reinterpret university policy.

Anderson suggested in a statement after his firing that the university’s actions were intended to avoid paying his buyout, as he had a contract that expired in 2027. He compared his situation to that of former University of Kansas football coach David Beaty, who won a $2.5 million settlement after being fired for cause.

Nate Dreiling, who previously served as Utah State’s defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach under Anderson, has been named interim head coach. The university has expressed its commitment to building a successful athletics program based on student success and integrity.

The Utah State Aggies will open the 2024 season on August 31st against Robert Morris. The decision to fire Anderson undoubtedly had a major impact, but the university believes it was necessary given the circumstances.

As Utah State moves forward, they strive to build a winning athletics program that prioritizes student success and upholds principles of integrity. The university’s decision reflects their commitment to maintaining a positive and compliant athletic environment for their student-athletes and staff.
