Road closure in downtown Indy in preparation for Eucharistic procession

play

Thousands of Catholics will parade down Meridian Street and Capital Avenue on Saturday to celebrate the revival of the Eucharist as part of the National Eucharistic Congress.

About 50,000 people nationwide traveled to downtown Indianapolis as part of a three-year movement in the Catholic Church hoping to address American Catholics’ spiritual apathy toward the Eucharist after church leaders discovered that only a third of American Catholics believe the presence of Jesus Christ abides in the Eucharist, a core belief of Catholicism.

After a week of spiritual reflection, tens of thousands of Catholics will celebrate their renewed love and understanding of the Eucharist during Saturday’s Eucharistic Procession.

Followers of Christ take part in the Eucharistic Procession, a sacred procession in which they follow the sacrament placed in a monstrance and carried out of the church by a priest.

More: Cardinal Pierre calls on Catholics to look within and ask themselves: ‘What is Eucharistic revival?’

The Eucharistic Procession begins at 3:00 PM and ends at 5:00 PM. The procession route begins at North Meridian Street and ends at Capitol Avenue.

To ensure the safety of Eucharistic Procession participants, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will close the following roads from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
