SEC makes big decision on who the real UT is

The American football season hasn’t started yet, but Tennessee has already achieved a notable victory over Texas.

On Friday, the SEC seemingly put an end to a debate that has raged between Longhorns fans and Volunteers fans since 2021 when it announced that Texas would join the conference after leaving the Big 12.

Who is the real “UT?”

In an email sent out with the preseason poll of media and All-SEC teams, the conference made a very clear distinction between Texas and Tennessee, listing the former as “TEX” and the latter as “UT.”

And so it was decided.

Why the SEC decided to go with “TEX” for the Longhorns and “UT” for the Volunteers is unclear, but that won’t stop opposing fan bases from having a field day over the conference’s choice of abbreviations. SEC fans treat football like a religion, and this will only add fuel to a budding rivalry.

Unfortunately, Texas and Tennessee aren’t scheduled to play a regular season game until 2026, so fans and players will have to wait a little longer before everything is settled on the field.
