Red Sox get unfortunate update on Triston Casas, positive news on Vaughn Grissom

There have been several proposed dates for Triston Casas’ return to the Boston Red Sox roster, but no significant progress has been made in the first baseman’s recovery.

The latest news from Alex Cora suggests the pattern will continue. The skipper reported in the first week of July that Casas was dry swinging and “feeling better”, but he hasn’t made much progress.

Before the Sox’ July 19 opener against the Dodgers, Cora said Casas is “far” from ready for a rehab assignment. He’s progressed to hitting a tee and taking a soft toss, but the first baseman isn’t game-ready yet. Boston hopes to have Casas back this season, but there’s no set timeline for his return.

Casas initially said he hoped to return to the Sox roster on June 21, immediately after he became eligible to come off the injured list. His timeline has always been optimistic, as rotational injuries, such as Casas’ rib cartilage problem or oblique issues, are often detrimental to hitters.

Red Sox Nation will have to wait a little longer for Casas’ first game back in a Red Sox uniform, but when he’s ready, he’ll be a huge boost to the offense.

Cora didn’t just have bad news for the Sox infield on July 19: second baseman Vaughn Grissom will begin his rehabilitation on July 20.

Grissom has been sidelined since June 1 with a hamstring injury. The 23-year-old missed all of spring training with a hamstring injury in his other leg and played in just 23 games before being suspended again.

Grissom will complete his rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester and is expected to need most of his 20-day maximum with the WooSox to be ready to play in the big leagues. Barring any setbacks, he should be eligible to return to action by mid-August.
