HAMPTON, NH — A Hampton woman was arrested and taken into custody Friday after she was accused of firing a gun into the apartment door of a neighbor, a man with whom she was in a relationship, police said.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., police were called to the Old English Apartments on Winnacunnet Road for a report of a woman banging on a neighbor’s front door and yelling. Police arrived and spoke with the complainant, but the woman, later identified as Erin McCarthy, 38, of Hampton, “refused to come to the door,” according to Hampton Police Chief Alex Reno.

“After investigating the report, officers warned McCarthy that if they were to return to the location for similar complaints, she would be charged with disorderly conduct,” he said.

About four and a half hours later, police received another 911 call about a shot fired into the front door of the complainant’s apartment. Reno said he and his girlfriend were inside at the time, but there were no injuries.

“A bullet was found on the kitchen floor of the caller’s apartment,” he said. “After further investigation, officers believed the suspect in this case was McCarthy.”

According to a report, police evacuated residents in the building for their safety and attempted to get McCarthy to the door, but she refused. Around 8 a.m., “after several attempts,” she left the apartment “with a loaded 9mm handgun in her hand,” Reno said. McCarthy was ordered to drop the weapon, which she did, and she was arrested, the report said. He said the gun “was reportedly used in this incident.”

Reno added: “After further investigation, it became apparent that McCarthy and the caller had previously been in a relationship.”

McCarthy was charged with reckless endangerment, criminal threats with a deadly weapon and domestic violence – criminal threats with a deadly weapon, all felonies. More charges could be pending. She was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Hampton District Court on Monday.
