Published 3:33 PM Saturday, July 20, 2024

Cape Hatteras National Seashore reported the death of a South Carolina man Saturday morning “as a result of an incident that occurred while kayaking.”

According to CHNS, the 72-year-old kayaker from Florence, South Carolina, set off from the beach near Ramp 43 of Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the morning of July 20, 2024. Ramp 43 is located east of the Cape Point Campground near Buxton.

“Bystanders reported seeing the kayak capsize while attempting to ride a wave approximately 50 yards from the beach. They swam out to pull the man from the kayak and brought him to the beach,” a CHNS news release said. “Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated but was unsuccessful.”

The Dare County Emergency Medical Service, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue and Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers assisted at the incident.

Because the fatal accident occurred while kayaking, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating the incident, CHNS said.

“We extend our condolences to the kayaker’s family and friends,” said David Hallac, Superintendent of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
