SC politicians react to the death of US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas has died at the age of 74, Lillie Conley, her chief of staff, confirmed. Jackson Lee was a leader in federal efforts to protect women from domestic violence and recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday.

Conley confirmed that Jackson Lee, who had pancreatic cancer, died Friday night in Houston surrounded by her family. The politician served as the U.S. representative for Texas’s 18th congressional district from 1995 until her death in 2024.

She had previously had breast cancer and announced on June 2 that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
