Dark clouds of smoke rise from Ross Island

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dark smoke billows through the air in southeast Portland due to a “wild fire” on Ross Island on Saturday, officials said.

Portland Fire and Rescue crews responded to the fire near the east bank of the Willamette River on Ross Island around 4:43 p.m.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but authorities say it may be related to the abandoned structures of the former Ross Island Sand and Gravel Co. on the island.
