Washington, July 21 (PTI) Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is recovering as expected from the gunshot wound he sustained during the July 13 assassination attempt on him in Pennsylvania, a former Trump physician said in a memo.

Trump, 78, survived an attempt on his life on July 13 when a young gunman fired multiple shots at him at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, injuring his right ear. The shooting killed one person attending the rally and seriously injured two others.

In a memo to fellow Americans on Saturday, Dr. Ronny L. Jackson said that as Trump’s former physician appointee, he was deeply concerned, as was the world, about his well-being following the attempted assassination of him.

“So I met with him late that night in Bedminster, New Jersey, to check on him personally and help him in any way I could. I have been with President Trump ever since and have been assessing and treating his wound daily.

“He is doing well. As reported and seen by the entire world, he sustained a gunshot wound to his right ear from a high-powered rifle used by the would-be killer,” the doctor said.

The bullet passed less than a quarter of an inch from his head and struck the top of his right ear, causing a wound about 2 centimeters wide that extended to the cartilage surface of the ear, Dr. Jackson said. He added that there was initial profuse bleeding, followed by significant swelling of the entire upper portion of the ear.

“The swelling has now subsided and the wound is beginning to granulate and heal well. Given the highly vascular nature of the ear, there is still some occasional bleeding, requiring a dressing. Given the wide and blunt nature of the wound itself, stitches were not required,” he said.

Trump was initially treated by medical staff at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, Pennsylvania, “who did an excellent job of examining him and treating his wound,” Dr. Jackson said.

“I would like to thank them for their excellent care. They performed a thorough evaluation for additional injuries, including a CT scan of his head. He will undergo further evaluations, including a comprehensive hearing test, if necessary. He will follow up with his primary care physician as directed by the physicians who initially evaluated him,” he wrote in the memorandum.

“In summary, former President Trump is doing well and is recovering as expected from the gunshot wound… I am extremely grateful that his life was spared. It is an absolute miracle that he was not killed,” said Dr. Jackson.

He added that he would remain at Trump’s side throughout the weekend to provide him with medical attention.

On Saturday, Trump held a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, along with his running mate and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. It was the Republican presidential candidate’s first rally since his assassination attempt.
