Donald Trump’s popularity on social media is growing, his followers are surging by millions after his assassination attempt

After the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, his social media following has suddenly skyrocketed. His followers have grown by millions in the week after the shooting that left him with part of his ear missing in the incident in Pennsylvania. Trump has 51% more followers on Instagram than his rival President Joe Biden.

Trump’s supporters grow by a million

Trump’s followers increased by a million after the incident, from 24.9 million followers a day before the rally shooting on July 13 to 25.9 million users as of Friday, July 19. The data shows that the former president’s popularity on social media has increased since the bullet grazed his ear six days ago, as reported by the New York Post. Joe Biden currently has 17.2 million followers on Instagram.

On Truth Social, Trump shared his predicament with death when he wrote, “felt the bullet rip through (his) skin,” earning him an increase of 220,000 followers, taking his total followers from 7.11 million to 7.33 million in a week. A similar trend was followed on Trump’s TikTok account, where his following increased from 7.6 million users on the day of the shooting to 8.8 million followers as of Friday.

Trump hashtag gains popularity after assassination attempt

Thomas Moore, CEO of Viralyft, analyzed the momentum of #Trump gaining momentum nationwide. The hashtag on TikTok received 668 million views, while #DonaldTrump had 282 million views and #Trump2024 had 157 million views. The data analysis also showed a 500% increase in the phrase “How do I register to vote” on Google searches within three days of the assassination attempt, as reported by the New York Post.

Moore speculated that the sudden increase in Trump’s social media following is a result of all the news surrounding his assassination attempt. He said the event “connected with a lot of (Trump) supporters on the internet.”
