Hampton Heat 200 Starting Lineup – Short Track Scene

Mark Wertz backed up the three preliminary laps he rode on Friday with the fastest lap in a time trial for the Hampton Heat 200, the second leg of the Virginia Late Model Stock Triple Crown.

Wertz, a five-time track champion and veteran, put his No. 55 on the pole with a lap of 15.863 on the flat roadway arena at Langley AFB in Hampton, Virginia.

“I didn’t know if I had it in me,” Wertz said. “I’m almost at the end of my career as a driver and we’re still trying to improve every week. I have a lot of people to thank.

He also thanked them all.

“It’s twofold,” Wertz said.

What does he think of his chances of staying there after 200 laps?

“I try not to think,” Wertz said. “We’ve got 200 laps to go. There’s a lot of really good cars here, my biggest problem is me. We’ve got to keep the pace going and keep the tires. I want to thank the team here at Langley Speedway for putting this race together as well.”

Wertz will be joined on the front row by reigning winner Brenden Queen, who did not expect to qualify well when asked about the time trials on Friday.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start in P11 in the race. The race will be broadcast live on FloRacing. Due to thunderstorms earlier in the day, the race will start just before 11:30 p.m. ET.
