‘We are Americans who have toured the UK, that’s why York is the best’

A US couple who spent months exploring Britain have revealed their top ten places to visit, with York coming in at number one.

Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis, from Portland, Oregon, run the YouTube channel Magic Geekdom, where they document all of their travels.

After eight months of exploring all things British, they returned home to reveal their top ten sights. And our own city comes in at number one.

They didn’t include London, as they assumed all tourists would visit the capital. Their top ten picks included Edinburgh, Lincoln, Newcastle, Manchester and Bath.

The Lake District came in at number two.

Then… “The number one place on our list to visit has to be York,” reveals Jeremy.

“On our first trip it was probably the only place where we fell in love with England. There is nowhere quite like York.

“It’s a city that is a perfect mix of history and charm and feels so quintessentially English.”

They were “baffled” by York Minster and said Shambles was “one of the coolest streets in England”. “We loved browsing the quirky, independent shops, such as Ghost Merchants of York, famous for its handmade ghost trinkets.”

They also enjoyed York’s pub culture, Cara adds, “from trying classic pub food at Ye Olde Star Inn, which was established in 1644, to meeting the locals at the Snickleway Inn, a great pub with quirky decor and 80s punk rock vibes”.

Their favourite dining spots included their beloved Bettys (of course) and the York Roast Company.

Jeremy adds: “I know York is one of the best places to visit because every time we go there we just want to put the camera down and immerse ourselves in the atmosphere and the vibes.

“It’s the kind of city where I just want to wander around and get lost.”
