Flood risk increases this week in Texas and Louisiana

Heavy rains have caused scattered flooding in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi over the past few days, thanks to a stalled frontal system. Meridian, MS broke a daily rainfall record on Saturday by receiving over 3 inches of rain!

As this previous front moves east, a new system will move south from the Midwest, bringing several days of widespread thunderstorms (top of page). This is expected to cause scattered flash flooding in parts of Texas Monday through Wednesday, with isolated flooding possible Sunday and Thursday.

Thunderstorms are expected to peak each afternoon and evening through Thursday. A few severe storms are possible, but flooding appears to have the greatest impact. Rainfall over the next week is likely to exceed 3-6 inches for much of Texas and Louisiana, primarily south of I-20. Isolated totals of over 8 inches are possible where multiple thunderstorms are possible.

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has flagged parts of the South where flooding is possible through Thursday, with the greatest risk of flooding expected Monday through Wednesday.
