2024 WIAA Four Girls Soccer Champions Crowned: Muskego, Oregon, Plymouth and Cedar Grove-Belgium

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin. – The final tournament series of the spring produced four champions at the 2024 State Girls Soccer Tournament at Southeast Sales Powersports Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park on Saturday.

Second-seeded Muskego (17-1-4) won its third straight Division 1 title by defeating fourth-seeded Kimberly (22-3-1) 2-1 in the championship game.

The Papermakers struck first before halftime with a goal from Emily McCarthy off an assist from Marie Van Zeeland. McCarthy’s shot from the left wing was deflected off the right post and into the goal at 39:54. The Warriors tied the score at 1-1 at 51:58 when Maggie Mattek assisted Anna Sikorski on a goal kick inside the left post. Klara Muench scored the unassisted game-winning goal at 71:36 of the second half when she navigated the defense in the penalty area and fired a shot that found the center of the net.

Muskego held a 20-9 advantage in shots on goal, and they attempted the only four corner kicks of the game. Sikorski led all forwards with 10 shots, including six on target for the Warriors. Savannah Mittlestaedt made five saves on goal to secure the win.

Emily McCarthy led the Papermakers with four shots, including two on target. Lauren Heckert played all 80 minutes in goal for Kimberly, making 10 saves.

Muskego won the championship for the fourth time in the past five state tournaments, which represents the Warriors’ total number of titles in their nine appearances. Kimberly finished second in their third state experience.

Top-seeded Oregon (18-1-1) defeated third-seeded Whitefish Bay (17-6-5) 2-1 in the Division 2 finals after finishing second last season.

After a scoreless first half, Addison Werth scored an unassisted goal from the right wing to the left side of the goal at the 49:14 mark of the second half. The Panthers’ defense and goalie Reece McCabe made sure the one goal held up for the shutout. She made three saves to seal the victory in goal.

The Panthers had a 16-7 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kylie Steel led Oregon with three shots on goal in five attempts, and Madonna Helf led the Blue Dukes with two shots on goal. Audyn Krueger made five saves in goal for Whitefish Bay.

Oregon won its sixth state championship and its second in the past three seasons. The Panthers have qualified for the tournament nine times in program history. Whitefish Bay finished second in its 24-member slatee State appearance.

Plymouth (20-1-2) won the Division 3 championship for the second straight year with a 2-1 victory over third-seeded Catholic Memorial (13-9-1).

The Panthers scored first on an unassisted goal by Hailey Batzner, who beat the defense with the keeper outside the penalty area at 11:07. The Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 with a goal less than four minutes later at 15:06 on a Lucia Brown header off a Kayden Scrima corner kick. The score remained tied until late in the second half when Melina Knowles curled a shot off the crossbar for the winning goal at 69:45.

The Crusaders outscored the Panthers 10-6 and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks entering the game. Knowles led Plymouth with two shots, both on target, and Margaret Sisk attempted a game-high three shots for Catholic Memorial, all on target. Paige Kurtz made six saves to be credited with the win in goal for the Panthers, and Alexa Flipowicz, who stopped two of four shots on target, was charged with the loss in goal for the Crusaders.

The back-to-back titles represent the total number of championships Plymouth has won in its four state experiences, and Catholic Memorial finished second in its 16e State appearance.

Last year’s runner-up and top-seeded Cedar Grove-Belgium (24-0-1) won this season’s Division 5 championship with a 5-1 victory over third-seeded The Prairie School (16-5-2) in the finals.

Cora Erickson scored a hat trick and added two assists to propel the Rockets to the championship. She scored the game’s first goal at 10:19 with a shot that hit the net from the left side of the penalty box. The Hawks tied the score at 1-1 with a penalty kick by Keira Kimbrough at 34:39. Erickson broke the 1-1 halftime tie early in the second half with a kick to the other side of the goal at 41:36.

Aubrey Marti scored from 25 yards out with an assist from Erickson at 60:38 to give Cedar Grove-Belgium a 3-1 lead. Erickson added her third goal on a breakaway at 74:46, then assisted on a goal from Hailey Prom, who put a shot into the right side of the goal at 78:52 to set the final score.

The Hawks outscored the Rockets 20-15 in the game, but each team had 10 shots on goal. Erickson led Cedar Grove-Belgium with nine shots, including six on goal. Megan Gavigan and Norah Boerner each recorded three shots on goal for The Prairie School. Aubrey Johnson got the win on goal for the Rockets, making nine saves. Finley Reminton made five saves and got the loss on goal.

Cedar Grove-Belgium won the program’s first championship in its fourth appearance at the state tournament. The Prairie School finished second in its ninth state experience.
