Stein, Robinson raise millions in North Carolina governor’s race as Democrat leads fundraising

The North Carolina gubernatorial race is bringing in millions in donations and spending, but in recent months, Attorney General Josh Stein has significantly outraised Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in one of the most closely watched races this cycle.

Money is also raised through the ballot box, as well-funded elections are held for positions such as lieutenant governor, attorney general and inspector of education.

Stein, a Democrat, raised $13,792,245 in the quarter from Feb. 18 to June 30, by far the most of any statewide candidate in North Carolina during that time period as Democrats seek to retain control of the office.Read more…)

More money is flowing into the campaign coffers of candidates in North Carolina’s 1st District than in any other congressional election in the state.

It is the most competitive congressional election in the state. The district covers much of the northeastern part of North Carolina.

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Don Davis was the only congressional candidate to reach seven figures in fundraising in the second quarter, bringing in just over $1 million. He is seeking a second term in office. (Read more…)

MILWAUKEE — In an unusual speech accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for president on Thursday on the fourth and final night of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump gave a detailed account of the attempt on his life last weekend when a gunman opened fire on him at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“I’m going to tell you exactly what happened. And you’ll never hear it from me again, because it’s just too painful to tell,” Trump said in his first public remarks about the shooting that left one rallygoer dead and two others wounded. The gunman was killed at the scene by police.Read more...)

The state’s Board of Elections voted in favor of the alternative party We the People, allowing presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appear on North Carolina’s ballots in November.

The board rejected Justice for All, Cornel West’s alternative party, in a 3-2 vote along party lines. Democrats rejected Justice for All’s bid to become a recognized party, in part because of questions about signatures on its petitions. (Read more...)

A new state-by-state scorecard of women’s health released this week by the Commonwealth Fund raises concerns about the care women receive and the implications of the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to Roe vs. Wade.

The “2024 State Scorecard on Women’s Health and Reproductive Care” is based on 32 measurements of state health systems and examines how state policies are changing the way women access and use health care.

“Based on the evidence and the data, one thing is absolutely clear: women’s health is in a very vulnerable state,” Dr. Joseph Betancourt, president of the Commonwealth Fund, said during a briefing with reporters on Wednesday.read more…)

North Carolina consumers win lawsuit against one of the nation’s largest creditors

The North Carolina Justice Center has received final court approval for a $5.75 million settlement in a class action lawsuit filed against one of the nation’s largest creditors, Portfolio Recovery Associations (PRA).

The lawsuit, filed in 2016, alleged that PRA violated North Carolina debt collection law by obtaining default judgments against debtors without providing “sufficient evidence to substantiate the debts allegedly owed.”Read more…)

As with all horrific acts of political violence in American history, the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump last weekend prompted a range of immediate and widely varying reactions.

And this reality is of course only reinforced by the turbulent politics of the current moment.

Add to this the often toxic ingredients of social media platforms, which provide a vehicle for people’s darkest emotions and instincts to be expressed, and the recipe for a descent into a destructive cycle of violence is clear.Read more…)
