Biden drops out of presidential race: will not seek re-election

Breaking news: President Biden drops out of the presidential race and endorses Kamala Harris.

President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he was withdrawing from the presidential race and will not run for another term.

However, he does not resign as president.

In the letter posted on his X accountBiden wrote, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it was my intention to be re-elected, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and the country to step down and focus solely on fulfilling the duties of my President for the remainder of my term.

Biden added: “I will speak to the nation more fully about my decision later this week.”

According to CNN, the last time a sitting president decided not to run for re-election was President Lyndon Johnson in 1968. However, Johnson made that decision earlier in the process.

CNN admitted: “Biden’s decision will also likely raise questions about his ability to fulfill the duties of the presidency for the remainder of his term.”

Biden endorsed VP Kamala Harris in a follow-up message, writing: “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all of my energies on my duties as president for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party’s nominee in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it is the best decision I have ever made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year. Democrats — it is time to come together and defeat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Biden drops letter in its entirety

The letter follows a troubling debate in which the president, 81, has at times sounded incoherent.

The decision, which came after unprecedented pressure from leaders in his own party, throws the Democratic nomination process into disarray. It comes just over a week after the failed assassination attempt on the Republican Party nominee, former President Donald Trump, who is surging in the polls.

“Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a nation,” Biden’s letter began. “Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments in rebuilding our country, lowering prescription drug costs for seniors and expanding affordable health care to record numbers of Americans. We have provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. We have passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. We have appointed the first African-American woman to the Supreme Court. And we have passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead.”

These claims stand in stark contrast to the message of former President Donald Trump, who slammed the Biden administration during his Democratic presidential acceptance speech, specifically citing rising inflation, Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and Hamas’s attack on Israel, the economy and the border crisis.

Biden wrote: “I know none of this would have been possible without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We protected and preserved our democracy. And we revived and strengthened our alliances around the world.”

Trump also noted that Biden’s party prosecutors have been pursuing their opponent’s nominee with a series of prosecutions, including one based on a new legal theory that raises a host of questions.

“Let me now express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has worked so hard to see me re-elected,” Biden said. “I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all of this work. And let me express my sincere appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.”

It should be noted that Biden had previously appointed Harris as border czar.

“I believe today what I’ve always believed, that there is nothing America can’t do — if we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America,” Biden wrote.
