LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada lawmakers reacted Sunday to the news that President Joe Biden would no longer seek re-election in the 2024 presidential election.

Sam Brown, Republican candidate for US Senate, commented on the development, saying: “While the Democratic Party is in disarray and more divided than ever before, the Republican Party stands united behind President Trump to take back the White House and regain the Senate majority. Together, we will continue to defend working class families and work to save the American dream.”

Congressman Steven Horsford went to X and thanked Biden saying, “From creating millions of jobs to addressing gun safety, President Biden has been an outstanding and important lifelong public servant. I am proud of all we have done together. Thank you for your patriotic leadership and continued service.”

Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto said, “I am grateful for President Biden’s lifetime of service and contributions to our nation. He has delivered time and again for hardworking Nevadans. I respect his deeply personal and courageous decision and look forward to working with him as he completes his historic term,” in a social media post Sunday afternoon.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford posted a message on X Sunday morning saying, “Both heartbroken and proud this morning. @POTUS @JoeBiden is a patriot who puts country before self, and I am so grateful for his service. God bless him. And God bless our country.”

Senator Jacky Rosen released a statement saying, in part: “President Biden has served our country with dignity and integrity in public office for decades. Under his seasoned leadership in the White House and with a Democratic majority in the Senate, we passed landmark bipartisan legislation to rebuild our nation’s infrastructure, expand veterans’ health care, and keep our communities safer from gun violence. We stood up to powerful special interests to make historic progress on lowering prescription drug costs and combating the climate crisis. It is a remarkable legacy of achievement, and I thank President Biden for his leadership and respect his decision not to seek re-election.”

Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager (D) said, “To a dedicated public servant who has devoted most of his adult life to the service of this great country. Thank you for restoring the soul of our nation,” in a message on X.

Congresswoman Susie Lee said in a statement: “President Biden has put our country first throughout his legendary and impactful career. Today, he demonstrated immense patriotism and selfless leadership. I have had the honor of helping President Biden secure his position as one of the most influential and bipartisan presidents of our lifetime — a legacy that includes securing once-in-a-century infrastructure investments, bringing back American jobs, passing historic climate change and bipartisan gun safety legislation, expanding veterans’ health care, and taking on big pharmaceuticals to lower costs for seniors and working families. I can’t thank President Biden enough for saving American democracy in 2020 and paving the way for a new era of leadership. I look forward to supporting Vice President Kamala Harris at the top of the ticket so we can once again defeat Donald Trump and far-right extremism.”
