(WASHINGTON) — Former President Donald Trump quickly responded to President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 election by saying his former opponent was “not fit to run.”

Trump released his statement on Truth Social, writing: “The corrupt Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – and never has been!”

He continued: “Everyone around him, including his doctor and the media, knew he was not fit to be president, and he was not.”

Trump then hit on some of his usual campaign points, slamming Biden over the line before adding, “We’re going to suffer tremendously because of his presidency, but we’re going to repair the damage he’s done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

At the beginning of his statement, Trump also called Biden “by far the worst president in the history of our country.”

The former president’s campaign immediately launched a new fundraising campaign following Biden’s announcement, writing: “But NOW he’s JUST DROP OUT OF THE RACE IN COMPLETE DISGRACE!”

House Speaker Mike Johnson wrote on X: “At this unprecedented moment in American history, we must be clear about what has just happened. The Democratic Party has removed the Democratic nominee from the ballot, just over 100 days before the election.”

He also called on Biden to resign.

“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to serve as president. He must resign immediately. November 5th cannot come soon enough,” Johnson posted on X.

Senator Josh Hawley was quick to respond to the news about Biden, calling on the president to resign.

“Then resign. If you can’t run a simple political campaign, you can’t be president,” he wrote in response to Biden’s statement.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise wrote on X: “The Democratic Party bosses just proved they have absolutely no respect for their own voters. After lecturing others about democracy, they took Joe Biden off the ballot, ruining the primary choice of 14 million of their own voters.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement, responding to Biden’s announcement: “For four years, the American people have faced historic inflation at home, chaos at the border, and weak leadership on the global stage. Our country is less prosperous and less safe than it was in January 2021. We cannot afford four years of failure.”

“Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has spent the last several weeks thwarting the expressed will of the American people in primaries across the country. Democrats in Washington have not proven they are any better than the president at delivering the secure borders, safe streets, and stable prices that working families deserve. They are selling open borders, higher prices, climate radicalism, and soft-on-crime policies, and the American people are not buying it,” McConnell’s statement concluded.

Trump campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles issued a statement on behalf of the former president’s campaign sharply criticizing Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The corrupt Joe Biden is a complete fraud and a disgrace to our country,” the statement said.

They continued: “And throughout this entire term, Kamala Harris – and every other Democrat in Washington – has sat by and done NOTHING. They are all just as complicit as Biden in the destruction of our once great nation, and they must all be removed from office.”

They also questioned whether Biden could remain in office after he decided not to run.

“The question for Kamala Harris is simple: Given that Joe Biden withdrew from the campaign trail due to his rapidly deteriorating condition, does Harris believe the people of America are safe and secure with Joe Biden in the White House for another six months?” they said.

Biden announced in a statement on Sunday that he is withdrawing from the 2024 election.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president, and while it was my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country to step down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” he said in his statement.

The president immediately endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

“My very first decision as a party candidate in 2020 was to choose Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it is the best decision I have ever made,” Biden said.

“Today, I want to give my full support and endorsement to Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year,” Biden said in a message on X. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and defeat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Biden said he plans to address the nation later this week with more details about his decision to withdraw from the race.
