From children’s toys to inspiring films

A heartfelt reunion took place in New Delhi on July 27 when producer Jay Patel received a nostalgic gift from his old friend, pilot Orlando Ortiz. The two reunited in New York after Ortiz watched Patel’s latest film, ‘Swatantra Veer Savarkar’.

Ortiz, a commercial pilot from Colombia now living in the U.S., was so moved by the film that he gave Patel a trompo, a childhood toy they both cherished. The emotional meeting continued with a meal at Rancho Mateo, a famous Colombian restaurant in Elizabeth.

Patel recalled their adventurous youth, speaking of flights over the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty, with Ortiz as his dedicated, if unconventional, flight instructor. Ortiz’s unique teaching methods helped Patel become a pilot faster than most students.

Over the years, Ortiz rose to become a leading commercial pilot in the U.S. Watching the film brought back memories of their adventures together, and their reunion was filled with memories of flying and riding Harley motorcycles. They also reflected on the cultural ties between Colombia and India, and shared a love of food, music and colorful traditions.

This reunion and significant gift underscores the deep bond and mutual respect between Jay Patel and Orlando Ortiz. In a touching twist of traditional roles, the “guru” Ortiz gave his “student” a gift, emphasizing the unique nature of their enduring friendship.
