SLED Investigates Shooting By Aiken County Officers

A man was shot after he started a fight with South Carolina officers near an elementary school, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office reported.

A man was shot after he started a fight with South Carolina officers near an elementary school, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The sheriff’s office responded to a report of a “suspicious” man near the intersection of Columbia Highway and Beaver Dam Road around 2 p.m. Thursday.

Officers found the man near a driveway next to JD Lever Elementary School in Aiken County. While speaking with officers, the man started a physical fight.

The fight stopped when an officer shot the man. The man was arrested and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

A police officer was also injured in the fight and was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Sheriff Michael Hunt requested that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conduct an independent investigation into the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
