How Much Apartment Space Can You Get for $1500?

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — As home prices continue to rise, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a rental home when you’re on a budget.

A study by the website RentCafe, conducted with data from their sister company Yardi Matrix, found that US cities are where renters can get the most space for $1,500 a month.

The South and Midwest offer the largest spots, while “key coastal workplaces are places where renters on a fixed budget must sacrifice square footage.” Nationally, the average amount of space renters get for $1,500 a month is 729 square feet.

So what can North Carolina renters get for that amount? More than the national average, it turns out — even in the state’s major cities.

Renters can get the most bang for their buck in Fayetteville, where they can get an apartment with an average size of 1,224 square feet for $1,500. In Winston-Salem, renters can get 1,108 square feet for that price, and Greensboro renters can get about 1,090 square feet.

In the Triangle, renters can rent just over 900 sq. ft. for $1,500. The average apartment size for that amount is 936 sq. ft. in Cary, 905 sq. ft. in Durham, and 903 sq. ft. in Raleigh.

Not surprisingly, North Carolina’s largest city offers the least amount of space for that amount of money. Renters in Charlotte can get an apartment with an average size of 858 sq. ft. for $1,500 per month.

Of the nation’s major cities, Wichita offers the most space for a $1,500 budget, with Kansas City renters able to get an average of 1,359 sq. ft. of living space for that amount. Columbus, Ga. offers the most space of the smaller cities and in the county overall, with 1,432 sq. ft. for $1,500 per month rent.
